What are Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)?
Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) program is a component of the Australian Government Australian Scholarships initiative.
ADS are a highly-valued form of development cooperation between Australia and partner Countries with which Australia has a bilateral agreement.
The ADS program aims to contribute to long-term development needs of Australia's partner Countries to promote growth and stability. ADS provide the opportunity for people to obtain tertiary qualifications at participating Australian institutions. In so doing ADS equips people with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country. Many ADS awardees have become leaders in government, academia and business in their own communities.
ADS create friendships and linkages with people and institutions in partner countries of the region. ADS also promote recognition of Australia as a leader in international higher education.
ADS for Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)

Who Should Apply?
Under the ADS 2010 intake announcement only the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) and ICDDR,B employees are eligible to apply. Candidates from all government departments such as autonomous, public service commission, corporate and constitutional institutions are also eligible to apply for the ADS scholarship.
All GOB applicants should provide a forwarding letter from the relevant attached Ministry or Government Department with the completed application form.
NOTE: Public University employees are not eligible to apply for ADS. However, the Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) and other streams of Australian Scholarships are open for ALL. All indigenous candidates and all female candidates working in GOB or ICDDR,B are especially encouraged to apply.
Applicants seeking to migrate to Australia should not apply.
Am I eligible for an Australian Development Scholarship?
To be eligible for an ADS award, applicants must be an employee of GOB / other GOB departments from PSC, autonomous bodies etc., and ICDDR,B and must satisfy the eligibility requirements outlined below.
1. Citizenship and visa status

Applicants must be citizens of Bangladesh.

Successful applicants must meet visa requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Applicants must not have Australian citizenship, permanent residence status, nor be in the process of applying.

Applicants must not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds or who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence status.
2. Academic background
Applicants must have completed a university level qualification which is at least equivalent in standard to an Australian Bachelors degree. Candidates with high level academic results in one or more university level degrees are encouraged to apply.
3. English Language Proficiency
Applicants must have strong written and spoken English language skills. Applicants must:

have undertaken the IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5, no earlier than 1 November 2007 (with no individual band score less than 6). IELTS exam taken earlier than 1 November 2006 will not be accepted and the application will be disqualified. *
Test results must be attached to your application.
*Please note: It is common for English test providers to charge a fee for testing services. The cost of any test fees charged by test providers must be borne by the applicant.

4. Experience
Applicants must have at least two years of work experience relevant to the field of study for which they apply.
5. Age limit
Applicants should not be more than 40 years old at the time of applying.
Fields of study
Applicants can nominate only one field of study from the list mentioned below. The selected field of study cannot be changed once candidates have been short-listed.
The fields of study for the GOB candidates have been agreed upon by both the Governments of Bangladesh and Australia based on agreed development priorities.
1. Government of Bangladesh
Scholarships to GOB candidates will be awarded with the understanding that on completion of their degree, they must work, at least for two years, in the relevant ministry of their study areas.

2. ICDDR,B
Applicants from ICDDR,B must send their applications to the Staff Development Office of ICDDR,B for primary short listing.

Selection Process
Selection is undertaken by the Australian High Commission (AHC), Dhaka, Bangladesh. AHC manages the application and selection processes. The selection process includes a written test and interview of the short listed candidates.
Please note: Only short-listed candidates will be contacted by AHC, Dhaka.
Gender equality is strongly taken into consideration during the selection process.
What and where can I study?
ADS enable candidates to undertake studies in Masters degree in Australia.

Studies must be undertaken in full time, on-campus study mode at a University campus in Australia. Courses delivered by “distance” mode or taught through an Australian university’s “off-shore” campus are not permitted in the ADS program.
How do I apply?
Before submitting an application, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria outlined above and that you have provided all the required supporting documentation.
Ineligible or incomplete applications will not be considered.
All information provided in support of your application for ADS must be true and correct. AusAID reserves the right to verify the contents of academic transcripts and other claims made by applicants. Applicants found to be submitting false, incorrect or misleading information will be disqualified from the ADS program.
Applicants that have duplicated/ forged written statements will be disqualified.
Applications sent by fax or email will not be considered.
Those applicants submitting more than one application will not be considered.
Applications submitted for 2010 will not be held over for 2011 or future years.
ADS awardees will be selected by the ADS selection panel convened by the Australian High Commission, Dhaka. Decisions of the selection panel are final and confidential and no correspondence regarding outcomes of the selection process will be entered into. Successful applicants will be notified of results in July/August 2009.

Supporting documentation requirements
Applicants must ensure that the following documentation is received by AusAID in one package, by 4:00 pm on 30 April 2009. Incomplete applications and applications without the required supporting documentation will be regarded as ineligible and will not be considered.
♦ Application Forms: should be signed and dated by the applicant.
♦ Birth Certificate: Certified true copies of your birth certificate. If the original document is in a language other than English, you should also provide an English translation. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS.
♦ Photocopy of Passport: Certified true copies of the personal data page from your passport providing official evidence of your full name, date of birth, gender and country of citizenship is required. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
♦ Graduation Certificate, Degree or Diploma: Certified true copies of the Graduation Certificate(s), Degree(s) or Diploma(s) of all university-level academic qualifications completed by the applicant (in original language and translated into English). DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
♦ Secondary and Higher Secondary school certificates: Certified true copies of the Secondary (or equivalent) and Higher Secodary (or equivalent) Certificate(s) completed by the applicant (in original language and translated into English). DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS.
♦ Full academic transcripts: Certified true copies of full academic transcript(s), showing grades for all university-level, HSC (or equivalent) and SSC (or equivalent) level subjects/units attempted by the applicant (in original language and translated into English). DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS.
♦ IELTS Certificate(s): Certified true copies of IELTS Certificate(s) demonstrating results of English tests completed not before 1 November 2007, and a minimum score of 6.5 (with no individual band being less than 6).
♦ Police Clearance Certificate: Certified true copies of police clearance certificate must be submitted with the application form. DO NOT SEND THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT.
Note: If you have appeared for O/A level exams / if your results are graded in CGPA, you must provide the marks obtained and the official percentile calculation of the total marks. Proof of the official calculation has to be submitted with the mark sheets.
Certification: To certify a document as a true copy applicant should present the original document and a copy to a Public Notary or other formally recognised authority in Bangladesh. This official should sight both documents and certify with a stamp or a signature or both that the copy presented is a true copy of the original document. Note that the cost of any fees charged by notaries for certification of documents must be borne by the applicant.
Dependants / Family members
Applicants should note that funds are not available to support accompanying dependants/family members.
Should award holders decide to bring their dependants to Australia at their own expense, they will be required to take out health insurance cover for accompanying dependants/family members.
Policy relating to the approval of accompanying dependants varies between Australian higher institutions. Once you have been selected for an ADS award, you should contact your nominated Australian institution to obtain this information. Most institutions prefer the arrival of dependants to be delayed until after the Introductory Academic Program.
Please note: DIAC will grant a visa for your dependants to travel with you only if the institution provides the necessary approval for your accompanying dependants. Evidence of the approval should be submitted at the time of applying for an Australian visa.

Holding other scholarships
Award holders are not permitted to hold any other Australian Government sponsored scholarship for the duration of the ADS.
Terms and conditions of ADS awards
The ADS Manual is the main reference document for AusAID, institutions and students of ADS. The manual sets out the terms and conditions of the award and ADS management processes from application, selection and placement at an Australian higher education institution, in-Australia processes through to award completion. The ADS Manual may be revised and updated by AusAID at any time without notice.
Part-time employment
