Australia contributes to a Bangladesh Police Computer Training Facility
High Commissioner Lee handing over a laptop kit to AIG Patwary
Australian Federal Police (AFP) has contributed a power generator and 10 laptop computer kits worth AUD $38,000 for the computer based training facility of Bangladesh Police’s Special Branch Training School.
The Australian High Commissioner, Dr. Justin Lee officially handed over the contribution to Mohammad Javed Patwary, Additional Inspector General, Special Branch, during an inauguration of the second phase of Computer Based Training Project at the Special Branch Headquarters on Wednesday, 11 May.
Speaking at the ceremony, High Commissioner Lee said “today’s handover highlights the close working relationship between the two police forces, and their joint commitment to combating transnational crime in the region”.
Dr. Lee also lauded Bangladesh Police for their leadership role in fighting crime in the region, particularly terrorism and corruption.
Additional IG Patwary accepted the equipment from Dr. Lee and said “this significant bilateral cooperation and friendship between Australia and Bangladesh will enhance the capabilities of Special Branch in crime, terrorism and through stronger border management”.
AFP Senior Liaison Officer to Dhaka, Superintendent Christopher Woods, noted the project was “part of a strong commitment by the AFP to working together with Bangladesh Police in fighting transnational, serious and organised crime in Bangladesh and throughout the region”.
The AFP began it’s partnership with the Bangladesh Police after opening a liaison office in Dhaka in 2007. In 2008 the AFP provided funding of AUD$77, 000 for an upgrade of the Special Branch Training School’s computer based training facility. This facility has been used to train Special Branch officers in Bangladesh Police IT systems, particularly officers of the Immigration and Intelligence areas. 1,843 Special Branch officers of all ranks have been trained using the facility to date.
