AUSTRALIAN AND BANGLADESH POLICE COUNTER-TERRORISM TRAINING
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Police Staff College Bangladesh launched an International Cooperation in Counter Terrorism Workshop in Dhaka on 26 April.
Speaking at the launch, the Australian High Commissioner Dr Justin Lee said the workshop was the first ever joint training exercise on counter-terrorism between the police forces of Australia and Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner said, “Australia and Bangladesh signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on counter-terrorism late last year. I am very pleased we have now been able to deliver this practical training workshop under the framework of the MoU.”
The week long course to be held at the Police Staff College is being delivered by seven Australian police officers and a representative from the United Kingdom Metropolitan Police and will involve 25 Bangladesh law enforcement officers.
Federal Agent John Cafferkey of the Australian Federal Police said practical police-to-police cooperation between countries was one of the most effective means to prevent and respond to terrorism. He explained the workshop would share examples of counter-terrorism response from overseas and include sessions on issues like forensics, intelligence, IT and human rights.
The Rector of the Police Staff College Naim Ahmed said his centre was committed to improving the capabilities of law enforcement officers to respond to terrorism and welcomed the opportunity to work with international partners. Sheikh Omar Faruque the Director of Training at the Police Staff College also spoke at the opening.
Since its establishment in 2000, the Police Staff College Bangladesh has trained more than 200 police officers of various ranks. It also conducts three month, six week and 16 day short courses as part of its curriculum.
