Strengthening links with Australia under the Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships

The Australian Government will support nineteen Bangladeshi professionals to participate in short courses over the coming year in Australia. Four senior ophthalmic personnel from the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) will be hosted by the Fred Hollows Foundation, Australia to improve treatment for eye disease in Bangladesh. Cataract accounts for 80% of blindness in Bangladesh, yet is one of the most simple and cost effective surgical interventions available globally.

Seven Fellowships have been awarded to academics from the University of Dhaka and Khulna University of Engineering and Technology to receive training at Monash University in Melbourne on developing and implementing climate change policies. Four senior staff from ICDDR,B will also participate in training at the University of Sydney on managing child malnutrition and public health leadership. A further four staff will undertake training at Griffith University in Brisbane addressing critical health problems confronting developing countries, particularly Bangladesh.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships program aims to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages between Australia and developing countries in the region and beyond. They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to become leaders in their field and influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes.

ALA Fellowships are for short term study, research and professional attachment programs in Australian institutions. ALA Fellowships are available across a broad range of fields including disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.

The next round of Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships will open in May 2010. Individuals may not apply, as applications are only invited from Australian organisations who in turn work with their overseas partners in identifying programs and suitable professionals for fellowship opportunities.
