Australia provides funds on Universal Children’s day 2008

Universal Children’s Day is observed worldwide on 20 November to reflect on the fact that children are one of the most important parts our society. They are a nation’s future and our hope for a better world. On the occasion of Universal Children’s Day 2008, Australian High Commission Dhaka announced that it was funding a Community Centre cum Pre-School in Tamaltala slum at Jamalpur Sadar under its Direct Aid Program 2008-09. The project will be implemented through Symbiosis Bangladesh, a local NGO in Bangladesh.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mr Douglas Foskett, will hand over a cheque of Taka 700,000 to Symbiosis’ Country representative Mr Abdul Muttalib Akand early next week. The High Commissioner said that childhood is a crucial time of learning and personal development. Receiving education is a basic human right and a crucial stepping stone to a bright future. He was very happy to support a project that aims towards educating deprived children to mark this year’s Children’s day.

The project will supplement and support the human rights-based work of Marginalized Children’s Project (MCP) which is being carried out by Symbiosis Bangladesh. With the construction of the Pre-School, improvements are expected in areas such as education and health through the provision of basic infrastructure. Nearly 100 children will use the Pre-School facility every year which will lead them on to primary education. The Centre will also be used as a relief centre and place for community meetings.
