AUSTRALIA DEVELOPMENT AWARDS STUDENTS

The Australian Government announced that 52 Bangladeshi students have been awarded Australian Development Scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia commencing in 2013.

The Development Awards under the Australia Awards were presented to Bangladeshis from diverse backgrounds, including civil servants and development workers. Ten awards have been given to the small ethnic minority groups across Bangladesh, reflecting Australia’s commitment to provide access to high quality education for that particular disadvantaged group.

At a ceremony in Dhaka on 25 November, the Australian High Commissioner Mr Greg Wilcock congratulated the Development Awards recipients on their achievement.

Mr. Wilcock said “You join the many hundreds of Bangladeshi scholarship holders who’ve studied in Australia over the decades and applied their experience to Bangladesh’s development. In doing this you also further strengthen the ties between our two countries.”

The High Commissioner noted the scholarships would strengthen Bangladesh’s capacity in key sectors such as education, health, public financial management, public administration, governance and climate change.

Mr. Mostafizur Rahman, Joint Secretary of the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance also attended, congratulating the awards recipients and expressed his thanks to Australia for its valuable support and cooperation.

More than 650 Development Awards have been awarded in Bangladesh over the past ten years.

Development Awards are funded annually and managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). For many years, scholarships have formed an important part of Australia’s bilateral aid program for Bangladesh.

The next round of Australia Development Scholarships will open from 1 February 2013 until 30 April 2013. Please visit the Australian Awards-Development Awards website: www.australiaawards.gov.au or www.southasiascholarship.org for further information.
